Students then log in to Seesaw using the simple QR code login process, then choose the “camera roll” option to upload the collage into their learning journal. Students researched the animals, then shared what they learned using PicCollage Kids. Here is an arctic animals example from a kindergarten classroom. Once students have completed a PicCollage, they’ll use the “share” button and choose “save to library” to save their collage to the camera roll of the iPad. It is super easy for students (yes, even kindergartners!) to upload their PicCollage creations into Seesaw and use the additional tools to enhance their collages even more. The items in their journals are shared with their teacher, classmates and (if the teacher chooses) with parents. Seesaw is a free tool that allows students to upload projects into their own digital learning journals. What I really needed was a digital portfolio tool that would allow students to easily and safely share their PicCollage creations with an authentic audience. Sometimes I would take screenshots and post onto our class website, but let’s be honest, that was a tedious process. However, as students created these amazing digital projects in our classroom, we had no way to share them. I love that the PicCollage Kids version has more free sticker options, and no video ads! Students love the ability to utilize the fun fonts, backgrounds, and stickers to personalize their projects and publish their research and writing. (Being free certainly doesn’t hurt, either!) The PicCollage Kids app fits this profile perfectly, and is one of the apps I use most frequently in K-2 classrooms. Students saved their completed portraits to their camera roll, then turned them in to me electronically via Google drive. I create a 10 minute video tutorial of the process. Students used the opacity slider in the first layer to reduce opacity and reveal the photo collage layer underneath. Step 3: Sketchbook X app: Adjust the opacity to reveal the blended self portrait For many students it was necessary to use the free transform tool to resize the photos to fill the screen. Layer one was used to shoot a selfie, and layer two was used to import the photo collage from the camera roll. In Sketchbook X, students created two layers. Step 2: Sketchbook X App: working with layers and free transform The students arranged them in a grid template, then saved to the iPad camera roll. The Pic Collage app allows students to add photos directly from the web without a Google image search. Students had to find four images representing Step 1: Pic Collage App: create a photo collage of your favorite things Obi-wan’s favorite pet, vacation, activity and food are combined into a blended self portrait.
